A young boy under the age of 15 was killed by a tram in Helsinki on Sunday evening.

According to police information, the Helsinki Police Department received Sunday evening a report about a railway traffic accident in Mäkelänkatu (north of Helsinki) in which a tram and a person were involved.

The accident occurred on a traffic-light-guided guardrail, police says.

As a result of the accident, rail traffic had to be cut on this section.

On Monday morning, shortly before noon, the police reported that the deceased person is a young boy under 15 years of age and that they are continuing to investigate the causes of the accident.

"A child and the tram were involved in the accident. The police thoroughly investigate the course of events and the causes that led to the accident," Police Commissioner Pekka Korhonen says.

The pre-trial investigation is still ongoing and the police said they will not provide any further information at this stage.
