The police in Eastern Uusimaa reported Tuesday about a serious traffic accident the night before in the city of Kerava (around 30 kilometers north of Helsinki). Four people were injured in the incident, which forced the authorities to mobilize rescue services.

According to police information, the accident occurred just before midnight (around 23:45) in Huhtimontie, a street on the outskirts of the city.

The incident began when a man driving a van crashed into the left side of a car which was driving out of a parking lot at the edge of Huhtimontie. As a result, four people were injured. After the accident, the driver of the van escaped the scene.

Ambulances and several missions from the rescue services were sent to the scene. A Border Guard helicopter was also alerted to assist in the search for the suspected driver.

Alcohol control

The suspect, a 17-year-old man, was found around 2:37 in Järvenpää based on information provided by a bystander.

The suspect was then subjected to a breathalyzer control, which confirmed that his blood alcohol levels were higher than allowed to drive.

The East Uusimaa Police Department is investigating the case as a serious danger to traffic safety and also as a violation of traffic regulations for driving a vehicle without a permit.
