Mokkapalat: easy, fast and delicious

What else could you wish from a cake than to be easy and fast to prepare and a delicious taste? Mocha pieces, the most popular Finnish cake has all this. In addition the ingredients are cheap and easy to find in any supermarket.

The origin of mocha pieces (mokkapalat in Finnish) is actually to be found in Sweden. The recipe appeared for the first time in the book of Sju sorters kakor (Seven kinds of cakes), also known as the 'Swedish baking bible' by ICA store chain. For this reason you may sometimes hear the cake to be called as “the best of Sweden” or “the good of Sweden”.

The fact is that a beloved child has many names, and the cake is also called chocolate squares, love squares and love cake. Nowadays, this is the most popular cake in Finland because it is easy to bake and its ingredients can be purchased at any food store.

If you wish to prepare this tasty and easy to make cake, here you have the recipe and instructions:

The recipe


  • 300 g of margarine.
  • 4 deciliters of sugar.
  • 4 eggs.
  • 2.5 deciliters of milk.
  • 7.5 deciliters of wheat flour.
  • 4 teaspoons baking powder.
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla sugar.
  • 4 tablespoons non-sugar cocoa powder.


  • 400 grams of powdered sugar.
  • 1.2 deciliters of strong coffee.
  • 1.2 deciliters of fused margarine.
  • 2 tablespoons cocoa powder.
  • (2 teaspoons vanilla sugar).


Stir the room temperature margarine (or bottom margarine 3 deciliters) and sugar until the mixture is light and flyffy. Add the eggs one by one, stirring well. Add the milk. Mix the dry ingredients well, and after stir it also well with the mixture of margarine, sugar and eggs. Spread the mixture on the oven plate over baking paper. Bake for about 20 minutes with the oven at 200 degrees.

Mix the frosting ingredients: chilled coffee and melted slightly cooled margarine, cocoa powder, powdered sugar and, if desired, vanilla sugar. Mix until smooth. Apply to the cake base only after it has been allowed to retreat, but still warm.

Put on the decoration before the frosting solidifies.
