Finland has continued to gain population so far in 2021, despite the fact that the number of deceased people far exceeded the number of births.

During January-July, 28,918 children were born in the Nordic country, but the number of deaths was much higher, 32,101, figures from Statistics Finland show.

The number of births was 3,183 lower than that of deaths.

Even so, the Finnish population increased by 9,866 during January-July.

"The reason for the increase was migration gain from abroad, since immigration exceeded emigration by 12,348," says Statistics Finland.

More immigrants

According to the preliminary statistics for January-July, 17,991 persons immigrated to Finland from abroad and 5,643 persons emigrated from Finland.

In all, 4,981 of the immigrants and 3,545 of the emigrants were Finnish citizens.

Finland's total population was 5,543,659 at the end of July, preliminary figures show.
