The Finnish population increased by 2,204 people in the months of January and February 2021. And the increase occurred despite the fact that the number of births was 1,434 lower than the number of deaths.

According to Statistics Finland's preliminary data, the country's population was 5,538,350 at the end of February.

"The reason for the increase was migration gain from abroad, since immigration exceeded emigration by 3,174," the statistical office says.

During January-February, 7,842 children were born, which is 302 higher than in the corresponding period in 2020. The number of deaths was 9,276, which is 67 higher than one year earlier.

According to the preliminary statistics for January-February, 4,619 persons immigrated to Finland from abroad and 1,445 persons emigrated from Finland.

Lower numbers

The number of immigrants was 992 lower and the number of emigrants 776 lower than in the corresponding period of the previous year. In all, 1,142 of the immigrants and 982 of the emigrants were Finnish citizens.

According to the preliminary data, the number of inter-municipal migrations totalled 40,154 during January-February. Compared with the corresponding period in 2020, the increase was 134 migrations according to the municipal division of 2021.
