Applying for citizenship will be more expensive in Finland in 2021. The Finnish Immigration Service (Migri) has published on its website the new fees to be charged for these services, which increase along with those of some residence permits.

Migri fees are set by the Ministry of the Interior, which issues an annual decree at the end of the year.

According to the last decree of the Ministry, issued a few days before Christmas, the processing fees of citizenship are now as follows:

  • The fee for processing a citizenship application submitted using a paper form is now 590 euros (520 in 2020).
  • The fee for processing a citizenship application submitted online is 460 euros (420 before).
  • The fee for determination of citizenship status will be 100 euros.

Residence permits

Regarding residence permits, the processing fees of all residence permit applications on the grounds of work (for employed and self-employed persons) submitted on paper have also been raised in 2021.

The new price for paper applications for residence permits submitted by employees and entrepreneurs is 690 or 610 euros in 2021, depending on whether the labour market test is applied. The previous fees were 640 and 560 euros, respectively.

There is no change in the fees for residence permit applications submitted online.

Work is, along with family ties, the main reason for applying for a residence permit.
