The Finnish air transport sector began the year 2021 immersed in the crisis caused by the coronavirus pandemic and travel restrictions, which have reduced the number of airport users to historical lows.

According to the latest figures released by Statistics Finland, in January 2021, altogether 179,304 passengers flew through Finnish airports, which was 91% fewer than twelve months earlier.

There were 132,253 passengers at Helsinki Airport and a total of 47,051 passengers at other domestic airports. Helsinki Airport accounted for 74% of all passengers at domestic airports.

But not even the capital's airport has avoided the fall. On the contrary, the debacle in Helsinki was even greater than the national average.

In January, the number of passengers at Helsinki Airport decreased by 92% and the combined number of passengers at other domestic airports went down by 88 per cent compared to January 2020.

One-half or 50% of the passengers were from international flights and the other 50% from domestic flights.

The share of passengers on international flights was 67% at Helsinki Airport and 4% in total at other domestic airports.

Air cargo decreased

Air freight and mail transport totalled 10,587 tonnes, which was 38% lower than one year earlier.

In total, 99.7% of the tonnes passed through Helsinki Airport and 99% were transported in traffic between Finland and foreign countries.

Altogether 5,526 tonnes of the transported volume of goods were outgoing and 5,061 tonnes were incoming.
