"The coronavirus epidemic has calmed down in Finland," the Finnish government said Thursday 25 June in a press release based on the latest weekly assessment by the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health.

According to the health authorities, the number of cases reported weekly to the communicable diseases register has continued to decrease and now the estimated basic reproduction number is 0.40–0.75, slighty lower than the previous week.

In fact, during the last period (15–21 June), no new cases were reported in 14 hospital districts. And very few were found in other than the Hospital District of Helsinki and Uusimaa, hast been the worst-hit area.

On Thursday June 25, the National Institute for Health and Welfare (THL, in its Finnish acronym) reported only 5 new coronavirus infections and zero deaths in the last 24 hours. It is the third consecutive day that Finland does not register deaths associated with Covid-19 disease. The last one was reported Monday 22 June.

Decline in hospitalized patients

So far, the country recorded 7,172 infections and 327 deaths since the epidemic started. Four out of every five deaths occurred in the Helsinki-Uusimaa metropolitan area.

The number of patients hospitalized due to the Covid-19 disease has also decreased, and the government forecast predicts that the number of new periods in hospital and intensive care will continue to decline further next week.

On Thursday, the number of patients in hospital care was 22, of whom 2 were in intensive care units.

"In the catchment areas for highly specialized medical care of the university hospitals, the situation regarding coronavirus-related hospital care is still very calm. Only a few patients have been in intensive care throughout the country during the last period. The intensive care capacity has not been exceeded at any point during the epidemic," the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health confirmed.

Last week, the number of people tested for coronavirus was again smaller than in previous weeks. And the percentage of positives has also continued to decline. An estimated 6,600 people have recovered from the disease.
