18 more deaths associated with the Covid-19 disease were reported in Finland on Wednesday 31 March by the Finnish National Institute for Health and Welfare (THL).
These fatalities brought the total death toll in Finland to 844 since the global pandemic started.
According to the Finnish health agency, the high number of deaths is due to the fact that the Hospital District of Helsinki and Uusimaa (HUS) updated the number of reported deaths retrospectively.
Most of the deaths that occurred in Finland in this pandemic (547) have been reported in the capital region, the epicenter of the epidemic and the worst hit area.
THL also reported on Wednesday 607 new Covid-19 infections detected in the past 24 hours.
So far, the total number of coronavirus cases diagnosed in the five-million country amounts to 77,452, according to THL's tally.
At the time of writing this article, the number of people in hospital care was 295 nationwide. Of them, 50 were admitted to intensive care wards.
New variants, incidence
By Wednesday 31 March, a total of 2,584 cases caused by the recently described coronavirus variants have been identified in Finland.
Of these, 2,403 are variants first detected in the UK, 180 are variants first detected in South Africa and 1 corresponds to the Brazilian variant.
According to THL, at the time of writing this article the country's incidence of new cases it was 159.6 new infections per 100,000 inhabitants in the past 14-day period.
However, in the Helsinki region, the worst-hit area, it was 313.2 new cases per 100,000 and in Southwest Finland (Turku and surroundings) it was 249.5.
