Finland registered 1,962 new cases of Covid-19 since last Friday and 14 more deaths  at the end of the Easter holidays, according to the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare (THL).

With these cases, the country of 5.5 million has surpassed the mark of 80,000 coronavirus infections since the start of the pandemic, according to THL's tally.

Specifically, 566 new cases were reported on Friday 2 April; 422 cases on Saturday 3 April; 302 infections on Sunday 4 April; 341 on Monday 5 April and 331 on Tuesday 6 April.

The 14 fatalities brought the total death toll in Finland to 860 since the global pandemic started.

Most of the deaths that occurred in Finland in this pandemic (557) have been reported in the capital region, the epicenter of the epidemic and the worst hit area.

At the time of writing this article, the number of people in hospital care was 249 nationwide. Of them, 45 were admitted to intensive care wards.

New variants, incidence

By Tuesday 6 April, a total of 2,700 cases caused by the recently described coronavirus variants have been identified in Finland.

Of these, 2,474 are variants first detected in the UK, 225 are variants first detected in South Africa and 1 corresponds to the Brazilian variant.

According to THL, at the time of writing this article the country's incidence of new cases it was 134.5 new infections per 100,000 inhabitants in the past 14-day period. 

However, in the Helsinki region, the worst-hit area, it was 261.4 new cases per 100,000 and in Southwest Finland (Turku and surroundings) it was 196.3.
