Two men were placed in pre-trial detention on suspicion of espionage in Sweden on Friday, according to the public prosecutor's office.

One of the men was arrested in September, while the other was arrested on Tuesday.

Both are accused of serious espionage over a period of 10 years. According to their lawyers, both deny the charges.

According to media reports, the pair are brothers, and the older is believed to have been a high-ranking head of a government agency and to have worked for the security police and the military, the Swedish news agency TT reported.

A spokesperson for the security police said the case was confidential.
