Nordic leaders condemned violent scenes from Washington where supporters of US President Donald Trump stormed the US Capitol.

"Every moment now brings a new impossible from Washington: there is an incredible nightmare of democracy going on. It is encouraging that there are those who show responsibility beyond party lines," Finnish President Sauli Niinistö tweeted.

In a subsequent tweet, issued in English soon after midnight (Finnish local time), the office of the President of the Republic added that "The American democracy has long been a model for the world. Its integrity and continuation are important for us all."
