The parliament of Estonia will elect the country's new president on August 30, it was announced on Monday.

Parties can nominate their candidates from August 26, parliament Speaker Juri Ratas said in Tallinn.

A two-thirds majority of the 101 deputies in the Riigikogu unicameral parliament is required to be elected president, an office that serves a largely ceremonial role.

The current president is Kersti Kaljulaid, who became the Baltic country's first female head of state when she took office in 2016.

It is not yet clear whether she will run for a second five-year term.
