The year 2021 continues to provide bad news regarding the performance of the tourism and hospitality sector in Finland.

According to the latest data released by Statistics Finland, Finnish accommodation establishments recorded 0.90 million overnight stays in February 2021, which was 51.3% less than the same month the year before.

The decline is especially marked among international visitors, who have almost disappeared from the country due to the restrictions derived from the Covid-19 pandemic.

Overnight stays by foreign tourists amounted to only 55,000 throughout the country, 90.3% less than a year earlier, while resident tourists spent 0.84 million nights, representing an interannual decrease of 32.1%.

Accommodation establishments in Uusimaa recorded 22,000 overnight stays by non-resident tourists (-87.2% year-on-year) and accommodation establishments in Lapland 12,000 (-96% from one year ago). The share of Uusimaa in all overnight stays by foreign visitors was 37% and that of Lapland 20%.

Overnight stays did not increase from any of the most important outbound tourism countries. The biggest drop was seen in overnight stays by British tourists, down by 63,300 nights. Their overnight stays fell 96.3% compared to February 2020.

The biggest group of non-resident tourists were Germans with 8,900 overnight stays. The second largest group was Estonians with 7,700 overnight stays. The third largest group was Swedes with 3,600 overnight stays, and fourth were US tourists with 3,000 overnight stays.

The total number of nights spent in Finnish hotels was 0.7 million, which was 54.9% less than twelve months earlier. Overnight stays by foreign tourists amounted to 53,000 (-89.9%). Recorded nights spent by resident tourists in hotels numbered 0.65 million (-37.4%).

In January to February 2021, a total of 1.59 million nights were spent in Finnish accommodation establishments. This was 55% less than in the corresponding period one year earlier.

These figures are preliminary data from Statistics Finland’s statistics on accommodation establishments and they have been collected from accommodation establishments with at least 20 beds or caravan pitches with electricity connection.
