Barcelona defender Gerard Pique has published details of his salary on Twitter after a prominent Spanish journalist suggested he and team-mates were earning significantly more at the financially stricken club.
Pique tweeted an image showing he had been paid 2,328,884.39 euros (2,646,059.26 dollars) on 30 December as the second half of his salary.
He asked for "a little bit more respect" in the caption.
Journalist Lluis Canut had suggested on broadcaster TV3 that Pique along with Sergio Busquets, Jordi Alba and Samuel Umtiti earn more, without citing a source.
This was rejected by Barcelona as "wrong and not the reality," with the club adding some of the players named were on variable contracts and unable to reach the figures suggested by Canut.
Barcelona are more than 1.3 billion euros in debt, lost superstar Lionel Messi on a free transfer last summer and the amount they can pay on wages is currently capped by the Spanish league.
