A Spanish company has been fined the equivalent of $6 million following an accident that left at least 17 people dead and dozens injured in the West African country of Ghana.

This was announced by the Ghanaian Ministry of Lands and Mineral Resources on Tuesday.

At the end of January, a truck loaded with explosives belonging to the Madrid-based mining company Maxam Corp collided with a motorbike and another vehicle near an electrical transformer.

The accident triggered a huge detonation that completely destroyed a village near the town of Bogoso.

The explosives on the truck were supposed to be used in mining. Gold is the main commodity mined in the region.
