Gap between Macron and Le Pen continues to shrink in French election

Three days before the first round of the presidential election in France, polls see main challenger Marine Le Pen closing the gap on favourite and incumbent head of state Emmanuel Macron.
While Macron dropped slightly to 26.5% in an Ipsos-Sopra Steria poll on Thursday, the far-right candidate Le Pen gained to 23%.
According to the poll, left-wing populist politician Jean-Luc Mélenchon lost slightly in third place with 16.5%.
An Ifop poll showed the same trend on Thursday, with Macron also losing slightly at 26.5% and Le Pen gaining to 24%.
Mélenchon remained stable at 17.5% in this poll.
Classic parties lag behind
Trailing behind in both polls are the candidates for the classic popular parties, the conservative Republican Valérie Pécresse with 8.5 to 9% and the Socialist Anne Hidalgo with 2% in each poll.
The far-right candidate Éric Zemmour, who was on a high at the beginning of the campaign, is now only at 8.5% in both polls.
