A man has been arrested in southern France after his 31-year-old flatmate was found with his head cut off, local media reported on Monday citing the state prosecutor.

The man is said to have confessed to killing the victim following a row on Christmas Eve in their shared accommodation.

The suspected killer, who is in his 50s, allegedly cut the head and arms from the body in order to dispose of it more easily.

Walkers discovered the severed corpse. The head was found by emergency services on Christmas morning in a plastic bag about 100 metres from the site, and the arms were also found nearby at the side of a road in Albias.

The victim had sustained stab wounds to the chest.

It was not clear what the two men had been fighting about.
