Spanish police have arrested 13 German holidaymakers on the holiday island of Mallorca for allegedly starting a fire in a German-run restaurant near a popular beach strip.

The tourists were having a party on their hotel balcony and flicked cigarette butts onto the reed canopy of the Why Not restaurant below, starting a fire on Friday afternoon.

According to restaurant owner Alice Klotz, about €150,000 ($158,340) in damage was caused.

Two people were slightly injured, the Mallorca Zeitung daily reported.

Authorities investigate whether the tourists started the fire intentionally or whether they were extremely negligent.

Wild parties

The restaurant is located near Playa de Palma, a beach strip popularized in German culture as the Ballermann, after the name of a beachside cafe.

In recent weeks, with almost no more Covid-19 measures in place, wild parties have been taking place again in the popular beach resort.

At the same time, more fights and thefts have also been reported.
