Japan's tennis ace Naomi Osaka has been knocked out of the women's singles at the Tokyo Olympics in a shock loss.

The 23-year-old suffered a 6-1, 6-4 defeat to Marketa Vondrousova of the Czech Republic.

After being broken four times, and committing 14 unforced errors, in the first set, Osaka began the second strongly but it wasn't enough to beat the 22-year-old Czech.

Vondrousova entered the tournament ranked number 42 in the world.

The Olympics were Osaka's first tournament since she withdrew from the French Open and skipped Wimbledon citing mental problems.
