A growing number of tourists, often men, have died in Mallorca after taking part in risky activities, such as what is known as balconing

Two tourists in Mallorca died in separate accidents within hours of each other, officials said on Friday, causing shock across the Spanish island.

The victims were a British 34-year-old and a Dutch 31-year-old, according to media reports citing the police.

Both accidents were caused by gross negligence, according to Diario de Mallorca newspaper.

Witnesses filmed the accidents and the footage was widely shared online.

The first accident occurred on Thursday morning in Magaluf.

Video showed a man climbing outside a hotel balcony on the seventh floor before he fell. Police said he was likely under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Two women in the British man's room before he fell told police he had been acting strangely just beforehand.

A deadly jump

Just a few hours later, the Dutch man jumped into the sea from a 25-metre cliff on Malgrats Island off Santa Ponça and hit a rock. His jump was filmed by his partner in a boat nearby and the couple's son was also on board, according to media reports.

It took some time before police divers managed to locate his body. They said he had not died from hitting the rock, but had likely lost consciousness and drowned.

A growing number of tourists, often men, have died in Mallorca after taking part in risky activities, such as what is known as balconing, when tourists jump into a pool from a balcony or fall while climbing from one balcony to another.

Prevention campaigns and the threat of fines have had little effect, according to the German-language Mallorca Zeitung newspaper.
