Urban buses will be free again in Madrid for two days.

According to the Madrid City Council, the residents of the capital city can travel without having to pay on the buses of the Municipal Transport Company (EMT, in its acronym in Spanish) during Tuesday 19 and Wednesday 20 April, coinciding with the restart of the schools and back to work after the Easter holidays.

This will be the second time that the municipal government decrees a similar measure in 2022. The previous one was on January 10 and 11 on the occasion of the return to schools after the Christmas holidays.

The free period for travelers will be between 00:00 on Tuesday and 23:59 on Wednesday.

As on previous occasions, those travelers who already have a transport ticket must validate it. Those who do not have one, will receive a single ticket from the driver at no cost.

Sustainable mobility

The Madrid City Council includes this decision among its strategies to promote sustainable mobility in the capital at a time when a very high number of trips are expected. At the same time, the city authorities want to promote the use of public transport as an alternative to private cars.

The municipal government's plan is to continue applying this measure on those dates for which a higher level of traffic than usual is forecast.
