Finland's population continued to increase in the period from January to May, despite the fact that the number of registered births in the country was much lower than the number of deaths.

According to Statistics Finland's latest data, the country's population increased by 5,925 people during the first five months of 2021.

During January-May, 20,264 children were born, which is 1,191 higher than in the corresponding period in 2020. The number of deaths was 23,031, which is 551 lower than one year earlier.

As the number of births was 2,767 lower than that of deaths, the reason for the population increase was migration gain from abroad.

According to the preliminary statistics, in January-May 12,268 persons immigrated to Finland from abroad and 3,769 left the country.

Immigration increase

The number of people who immigrated to Finland increased slightly year-on-year. It was 453 higher than in the corresponding period of the previous year, while the number of emigrants was 1,624 lower.

In all, 2,981 of the immigrants and 2,424 of the emigrants were Finnish citizens.

Finland's total population was 5,539,718 at the end of May 2021.
