Car sales in Finland grew 95% in May

The automotive sector continues to show signs of revitalization.

Car sales in Finland grew substantially in May compared to a year ago. However, the sector has not yet reached its pre-pandemic sales volume.

According to Statistics Finland's data, in May the number of passenger cars registered was 9,964, which was 94.9% up from the year before. But compared to May 2019, passenger car registrations decreased by 8.5%.

Among the new registered cars, the share of new electric passenger cars was 9.7% and plug-in hybrid electric cars 21.7%.

A total of 3 121 new electric and plug-in hybrid electric cars were registered, which was nearly four times more than the year before.

In May 2021 a total of 19,046 new motor vehicles were registered, of which 11,462 were automobiles. First registrations increased by 45.2% from the corresponding month of the previous year.

19% increase in 5 months

The number of passenger cars first registered in the January to May period was 46,788, which is 18.9% up from the year before. The most common passenger car makes first registered in the January to May period were Toyota, Volkswagen and Skoda.

In the first 5 months of 2021 a total of 83,904 vehicles were first registered. Compared to the year before, there was an increase of 17.6%.

These data are based on the Traffic Affairs Register of the Finnish Transport and Communications Agency (Traficom). The numbers are exclusive of the vehicles on the Ă…land Islands.
