Customers would be offered "more than 150 million products, including tens of thousands of products from local Swedish businesses," said Alex Ootes, vice president of EU expansion at Amazon.

Online retail giant Amazon on Wednesday launched a designated website for Swedish customers, adding the Scandinavian country to its list of countries covered.

Customers would be offered "more than 150 million products, including tens of thousands of products from local Swedish businesses," said Alex Ootes, vice president of EU expansion at Amazon.

The retail giant in August confirmed plans for a launch, following speculation for some time.

Swedish customers had earlier been able to shop on Amazon through websites in other European countries, including Britain and Germany, but delivery costs were higher.

The dedicated website has images of several well-known Swedish buildings including Stockholm City Hall and Turning Torso, a 54-storey high skyscraper in the southern city of Malmo.

A winner of the pandemic

The retailer has been one of the big winners of the coronavirus pandemic, with many people ordering for home delivery amid lockdowns and other restrictions.

Last week, Amazon said it would invest in a renewable energy project in western Sweden to power its data centres in the country.
