For yet another week, the number of new diagnosed infections and deaths associated with the disease caused by Covid-19 in Finland continues to decline.

On Monday, 3 May, the Finnish health authorities reported 537 new infections and 1 death registered in the last 72 hours.

Specifically, there were 288 new infections recorded on Saturday 1 May, 132 on Sunday 2 May and 117 on Monday 3 May, according to the National Institute for Health and Welfare (THL, in its Finnish acronym).

The number of cases and fatalities reported over the weekend and on Monday is slightly lower than that reported the previous Monday (593 infections, 3 deaths), but it seems that the rate of decline is somehow slowing down compared with previous weeks.

The highest incidence of cases is now in the Helsinki-Uusimaa region (91.5 cases per 100,000 inhabitants) and in the Länsi-Pohja hospital district, at the Swedish border (82.1).

The incidence for the entire country continues to decline. At the time of writing this article it is 54.7 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, according to THL's figures.

New variants

To date, Finland has reported 87,345 cases of coronavirus. Of these, 5,374 correspond to the new variants of the virus, the majority being the British. Also cases caused by the South African, Indian and Brazilian variants have been found.

At the time of writing this article, the number of people in hospital care was 120 nationwide. Of them, 28 were admitted to intensive care wards.

So far, the country of 5.5 million inhabitants has registered 915 deaths caused by or associated with the Covid-19 disease since the global pandemic began more than a year ago.
