Spanish exports of goods grew by 22.1% from January to August 2021 compared to the same period of the previous year, according to the latest foreign trade report released by the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Tourism.

The value of foreign sales of goods was 201.62 billion euros, reaching a new maximum for the period, customs data show. For their part, imports also rose 21.6% to 212.49 billion euros.

In August 2021, Spanish exports of goods grew by 25.1% over the same month in 2020, to 22.09 billion euros. Imports increased 33.9% in year-on-year terms to 25.97 billion euros.

As a result, in August 2021 there was a deficit of 3.87 billion euros, 123.3% higher than in the same month of 2020.

The coverage rate stood at 85.1%, which is percentage points less than in August 2020.

EU, the main destination

"Comparing it with levels prior to the pandemic, the variation rate remains positive, as exports grow by 13.7% and imports by 10.9% compared to August 2019," the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Tourism says in a press release.

In August 2021, exports to the European Union (EU) were 59.2% of the total (58.8% in August 2020) and increased by 26%.

Sales to the euro zone grew by 25.5% and those to the rest of the EU grew by 29.8%.
