Car purchases regain strength in Finland after a downward start to the year.

According to Statistics Finland, in March 2021 the number of new passenger cars registered was 10,428, which was 13.3% up from the year before.

The share of new electric passenger cars was 7.6% and plug-in hybrid electric cars 21.1%. A total of 2,988 new electric and plug-in hybrid electric cars were registered, which was 68% up from the year before.

A total of 18,215 new motor vehicles were registered in the country, of which 12,244 were automobiles. First registrations increased by 14.8% from the corresponding month of the previous year.

These figures are based on the Traffic Affairs Register of the Finnish Transport and Communications Agency (Traficom) and they have been produced by Statistics Finland.

The numbers are exclusive of the vehicles on the Åland Islands.

January-March

The good results for the sector in March have not been enough to end the downward trend accumulated so far this year.

So far this year (January-March period), the number of passenger cars first registered was 27,978, which is 1% down from the year before.

The most common passenger car makes first registered in the January to March period were Toyota, Skoda and Volkswagen.

A total of 47,225 vehicles were first registered in Januray-March. Compared to the year before, there was an increase of 4.5%.
